Why an emoji looks different elsewhere
The single most common surprise: you copy an emoji, send it, and it looks different on the recipient's phone.
That's expected. You're sending a character, not a picture, and every platform draws its own. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung all have their own artwork for the same character. Some differ enough to change the tone of a message. We wrote about why the same emoji looks different on every phone if you want the full story.
Practical version: don't rely on a specific emoji's appearance to carry meaning in anything important.
If an emoji shows as a box
A box or a question mark means the device doesn't have artwork for that character, usually because the emoji is newer than the operating system. Nothing is broken and the character is intact; the recipient's system just can't draw it. Older emoji are safer for wide audiences.
