In 2017, Google had to publicly commit to fixing a hamburger. Their burger emoji π placed the cheese under the patty, the internet noticed, and the CEO of one of the world's largest companies announced he would "drop everything" to address it. It remains my favorite bug report of all time β and it's the perfect door into a question people ask constantly: why does the same emoji look different on every device?
Emoji are letters, not pictures
The thing that unlocks everything: when you send an emoji, you are not sending an image. You're sending a character β exactly like the letter "A" β identified by a number in the Unicode standard. π is U+1F600. The β near and dear to this site is U+2615.
The Unicode Consortium defines the number and a terse description ("GRINNING FACE"). What it deliberately does not define is the artwork. Every platform draws its own: Apple has its glossy set, Google has Noto Color Emoji, Samsung and Microsoft each have theirs. Sending π¬ from an iPhone to an Android phone transmits only the code β the receiving phone draws that character in its own handwriting.
Usually the handwritings agree. Sometimes they don't β famously, the "grimacing face" read as awkward on one platform and closer to excited on another in their early designs, so the same text arrived with a different emotional temperature. That's the burger problem with real social consequences: identical message, different picture, misread tone.
Why some emoji arrive as empty boxes
That hollow rectangle (β― β lovingly known as "tofu") means the sender's platform knows an emoji that the receiver's fonts can't draw yet. New emoji ship with operating system updates, not app updates β so a friend on a shiny new OS can send characters your older phone literally cannot render. The message arrived fine; your device just has no artwork for it.
The duct tape behind family emoji
Here's the genuinely clever part. Many emoji that look like single characters are actually several characters glued together with an invisible one called the zero-width joiner (ZWJ).

- π³οΈβπ the pride flag is white flag + joiner + rainbow
Platforms that understand the sequence draw one combined glyph. Platforms that don't fall back to showing the pieces side by side β which is why an elaborate emoji occasionally arrives as a small parade of simpler ones. Skin tones work similarly: a modifier character rides behind the base emoji. It's compatibility engineering disguised as cuteness, and honestly, it's beautiful.
Finding the right one is the actual daily problem
There are over 3,800 emoji now. The keyboard on your phone organizes them by category and recent use, which works until you need "that one that's kind of a spiral" or the difference between π€ (triumph, allegedly) and π (plain anger β and yes, the official name of π€ is "face with look of triumph," which nobody has ever used it for).

Emoji are the largest shared writing system ever adopted β thousands of characters, agreed on by committee, drawn by rivals, glued together with invisible joiners, and still somehow mostly understood across every device on earth. The burger got fixed, by the way. Cheese on top of the patty, where it belongs.
